Lifecycle Management

Industrial Design Portfolio Management

A registered industrial design is a valuable commercial asset — but only if it is actively managed throughout its full lifecycle. Design registrations that lapse through missed renewals, ownership records that are not updated after corporate transactions, and design assets that are not strategically exploited through licensing all represent avoidable commercial losses that no business should accept.

Legacy Partners provides centralised, strategic industrial design portfolio management for product companies, design studios, manufacturers, and multinational corporations operating across the UAE, Oman, GCC, and global markets — one point of contact for the entire portfolio.

A design registration lapsed through a missed renewal is immediately available for a competitor to copy. The protection you spent months obtaining can be permanently lost for failure to pay a government renewal fee. Our renewal management service ensures this never happens to your portfolio.

A. DESIGN RENEWALS & ANNUITY MANAGEMENT

Protecting Your Design Asset Through Timely Renewal

Industrial design registrations are not perpetual — they must be renewed periodically to remain in force. In the UAE and most GCC jurisdictions, design registrations are granted for an initial 5-year term and must be renewed at the end of each period to maintain protection. Failure to renew on time results in the design registration lapsing — and once lapsed, a competitor may freely copy the design.

B. ASSIGNMENT RECORDING

Formally Recording Ownership Transfers at the Registry

When a design registration is transferred from one party to another — through a commercial sale, corporate restructuring, group entity transfer, or M&A transaction — the assignment must be formally recorded at the national design registry to be legally effective against third parties. An unrecorded assignment leaves the new owner without enforceable rights against infringers and without standing to bring enforcement proceedings.

E. PORTFOLIO MONITORING

Watching for Third-Party Conflicts and New Infringements

Frequently Asked Questions

The design registration lapses and can no longer be enforced against infringers. In some GCC jurisdictions, late renewal within a grace period is possible with additional government fees. After the grace period expires, the registration is permanently lost. Our renewal management service is specifically designed to ensure this never happens.

Yes. Recording the assignment is necessary for it to be legally effective against third parties — including infringers and subsequent purchasers without notice of the transfer. An unrecorded assignment significantly limits the new owner's ability to enforce the design right.

Yes. A design licence can cover any territory, including multiple GCC countries. The licence agreement should specify the permitted territory precisely, and recordal of the licence with the relevant national registries in the licensed territory is recommended for full enforceability.

Monitoring fees depend on the size of the portfolio, the jurisdictions covered, and the frequency and format of reporting. We provide a tailored cost estimate at the project scoping stage based on your specific portfolio profile.
