A registered industrial design is a valuable commercial asset — but only if it is actively managed throughout its full lifecycle. Design registrations that lapse through missed renewals, ownership records that are not updated after corporate transactions, and design assets that are not strategically exploited through licensing all represent avoidable commercial losses that no business should accept.
Legacy Partners provides centralised, strategic industrial design portfolio management for product companies, design studios, manufacturers, and multinational corporations operating across the UAE, Oman, GCC, and global markets — one point of contact for the entire portfolio.
A design registration lapsed through a missed renewal is immediately available for a competitor to copy. The protection you spent months obtaining can be permanently lost for failure to pay a government renewal fee. Our renewal management service ensures this never happens to your portfolio.
Industrial design registrations are not perpetual — they must be renewed periodically to remain in force. In the UAE and most GCC jurisdictions, design registrations are granted for an initial 5-year term and must be renewed at the end of each period to maintain protection. Failure to renew on time results in the design registration lapsing — and once lapsed, a competitor may freely copy the design.
| Jurisdiction | Initial Term | Max Term | Renewal Period | Late Renewal Grace |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UAE | 5 years | 15 years | Every 5 years | Limited — act immediately if missed |
| Saudi Arabia | 5 years | 15 years | Every 5 years | Limited grace period available |
| Oman | 5 years | 15 years | Every 5 years | Limited — contact us immediately |
| Qatar | 5 years | 15 years | Every 5 years | Limited grace period available |
| Kuwait | 5 years | 10 years | Every 5 years | Limited — verify per filing |
| Bahrain | 5 years | 15 years | Every 5 years | Limited grace period available |
| WIPO Hague | 5 years | Varies by country | Every 5 years | 6-month late renewal with surcharge |
When a design registration is transferred from one party to another — through a commercial sale, corporate restructuring, group entity transfer, or M&A transaction — the assignment must be formally recorded at the national design registry to be legally effective against third parties. An unrecorded assignment leaves the new owner without enforceable rights against infringers and without standing to bring enforcement proceedings.
Our Assignment Recording Services:
Design ownership changes arise across a wide range of corporate events — acquisitions, mergers, demergers, group restructuring, founder exit, and insolvency scenarios. We manage:
| Licence Type | Description | Common Commercial Use |
|---|---|---|
| Exclusive licence | Licensee has sole rights to exploit the design; owner may be excluded | Manufacturing partner requiring exclusivity |
| Non-exclusive licence | Multiple licensees can use the design simultaneously | Maximising licensing revenue across markets |
| Sole licence | Licensee and owner can both exploit; no further licences granted | Balance between licensee exclusivity and owner rights |
| Sub-licence | Licensee may grant rights to a sub-licensee | Multi-tier distribution/franchise arrangements |
| Territory-limited | Rights granted only in specified countries or regions | GCC-only licence; single-country arrangement |
Design Licensing Services: Drafting agreements, structuring royalty mechanisms (per-unit, lump-sum, minimum guarantees), advising on licensee due diligence and quality control, and recordal of licences at national registries.
